Shonda Rhimes is a well-known and celebrated American author, screenwriter, and television producer. She is best known for her work as creator, executive producer, lead author, and showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal. These shows have been highly acclaimed by critics and a loyal fan base and have been responsible for the careers of several of her stars.

Shonda has also been a producer on other television shows such as Off The Map, The Catch, and How To Get Away With Murder.

In 2015 Shonda published her first book and her first memoir Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person. In 2017, she signed a four-year development contract (estimated at around $100 million) with Netflix and made all her next productions “Netflix Originals” for the duration of the contract.

Shonda Rhimes Bio & Age

Shonda Lynn Rhimes was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 13, 1970, the daughter of Vera and Ille Rhimes Jr. She was the youngest of six children. Her father was a college professor, while her mother was a university administrator.

Her mother Vera attended college while raising all of her children and earning a doctorate. Her father later became the Chief Information Officer of the University of Southern California. She lived with her parents and siblings in Park Forest South, Illinois.

From an early age, she showed an affinity for storytelling. During her high school years, she volunteered at the hospital, which sparked her interest in the hospital environment. She attended Marian Catholic High School in Illinois and later Dartmouth College, where she studied English and Film Studies.

During her school years, she joined the Black Underground Theater Association, which meant that she divided her time between directing, performing, and writing. She graduated from Dartmouth in 1991.

After college, she moved to San Francisco and began working for McCann Erickson, a global advertising company. Shortly thereafter she moved to Los Angeles and began studying screenwriting at the University of Southern California, where she was top of her class and was awarded the Gary Rosenberg Writing Fellowship.

She received her master’s degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. While still a student at USC, she began an internship with Debra Martin Chase, a film and television producer who served as Shonda’s mentor.

Shonda Rhimes is currently unmarried and as such has no partner. The television producer has also simply never been married or divorced. Although she has made it her goal not to make finding the “right one” a goal in her life, she has had a few relationships over the years, but she has admitted that she does not believe marriage is an option for her.
