By February 2016, she was undergoing anti-estrogen treatment to shrink the tumor and hoped for a lumpectomy but the presence of multiple tumors meant she had to have a mastectomy in May 2016.
The surgery revealed that some cancer cells might have spread beyond the lymph nodes so Doherty needed chemotherapy and radiotherapy afterward. She announced that her cancer was in remission on April 29, 2017.
However, on February 4, 2020, Shannen Doherty disclosed that her cancer had returned and progressed to stage four. By October 2021, she updated her condition in an interview, and in June 2023, she revealed that the cancer had spread to her brain and was terminal.
In November 2023, she shared that the cancer had also spread to her bones. In January 2024, Doherty reported that she was undergoing a new treatment that was effectively penetrating the blood-brain barrier which she described as a “miracle.”
