Roy Nelson was born on June 20, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and also grew up in that city. He also played rugby in Las Vegas Blackjacks for two years (between 2002-2003), before beginning his MMA career in April 2004. His impressive record of 6 victories in seven fights contributed to his being picked up by the International Fight League (IFL).

He became IFL Heavyweight Champion in 2007 before the IFL was merged. In 2010 he moved to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) where he continued to be successful. After his contract with the UFC expired in 2017, he signed with Bellator MMA as a fighter. His contract with Bellator MMA was an all-around contract and his first fight took place on September 23rd, 2017, which he won by unanimous decision against Javy Ayala.
