You might know her from her roles in popular TV shows like “Ally McBeal” where she played Nelle Porter from 1998 to 2002. She even won a fancy award for that role! Portia de Rossi was born as Amanda Lee Rogers in Horsham Victoria, Australia. Her mom Margaret worked as a medical receptionist and her dad Barry Rogers passed away when she was nine. She grew up in Grovedale near Geelong Victoria and started modeling for ads and some TV spots when she was young.

When she was 15 in 1988 she decided to change her name to Portia de Rossi. Later in 2005, she explained that she did it to give herself a fresh start. She picked “Portia” from a character in Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice” and added an Italian last name for a bit of flair.

Portia went to Geelong Grammar School Melbourne Girls Grammar and then studied law at the University of Melbourne.
