When the name O J Simpson appears in media circles, it strikes different threads. He is indeed a man of many talents, but he has always managed to find his way through the most difficult controversies. As a professional sportsman, he enjoyed a successful 11-year career as a running back in the American National Football League (NFL). After his retirement, he made a successful transition to acting and sports broadcasting.

However, all the success O. J. Simpson had as a sports celebrity and broadcaster was overshadowed by the series of heinous criminal charges he faced recently. In 1994 he was charged with the murder of his second wife, Nicole Brown, and a friend, leading to an 11-month, high-profile trial.

O. J. Simpson Bio

O. J. Simpson was born Orenthal James Simpson in San Francisco, California on July 9, 1947. His mother Eunice (née Durden) worked as a hospital administrator and his father Jimmy Lee Simpson worked as a professional cook and bank administrator. His parents’ marriage soon broke up and Simpson was raised by his mother alone.

As a teenager, O. J. Simpson was part of a street gang called “The Persian Warriors” which led to several run-ins with the law. After several arrests, young Simpson had the opportunity to meet retired baseball star Willie Mays, whose advice inspired him to redesign his life.

Simpson received his high school education at Galileo High School in San Francisco, where he showed off his incredible talents in American football. After graduating from high school, however, he did not receive much attention from college recruiting agencies due to his unimpressive high school scores. In 1965, he enrolled at San Francisco City College. There he showed exceptional football talent, and he received offers from several other colleges to transfer him to their schools.

O. J. Simpson eventually settled at the University of Southern California (USC), where he played in the running back position in 1967 and 1968. Simpson was indeed a star during his career as a college football player. He won numerous laurels, including the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Award.

In 1969, Simpson was offered a contract by the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League, which was the highest ever awarded to a professional athlete at the time. Contrary to expectations, Simpson struggled with the Buffalo Bills in his first seasons. His career took a much better turn in the 1972 season, however.

In 1973, he was the first player to reach the coveted 2,000-yard fast milestone, for which he received the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. He remained in excellent form for the Bills until the 1977 season when his career was ended by injury. He later moved to the San Francisco 49ers in the 1978 and 1979 seasons, after which he finally retired.

After his retirement, Simpson maximized his status as a sports celebrity and promptly began an acting career. He appeared on several television shows and also starred in a number of films. In addition to his acting career, Simpson also worked twice as a football commentator.

Wife, Daughter, Son

Retired American football star O. J. Simpson is currently unmarried. However, he has been married twice in the past. He entered his first marriage at the age of 19 with Marguerite L. Whitley, who was his childhood sweetheart. Their marriage took place on June 24, 1967, but ended in divorce in March 1979.

As a couple, they had three children: sons Arnelle (born 1968) and Jason (born 1970) and daughter Aaren (1977-1979). Aaren Simpson tragically died in 1979 after drowning in the family swimming pool.

In 1977 Simpson met another young woman named Nicole Brown who worked as a waitress in a club in Beverly Hills. Although he was still legally married to his wife, he immediately entered into a relationship with Brown. On February 2, 1985, O. J. Simpson married Nicole Brown. They had two children, a daughter named Sydney Brooke Simpson (born 1985) and a son named Justin Ryan Simpson (born 1988).

However, the seven-year marriage between O J Simpson and Nicole Brown was marred by allegations of marital abuse and finally ended in divorce in 1992. The following year, the couple made several attempts to reconcile, without success.

The relationship between Simpson and Brown took a truly bizarre and tragic turn on June 12, 1994, when the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and her boyfriend Ron Goldman were found in Brown’s home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Simpson was later named as the prime suspect in the murder of his estranged wife, which marked the beginning of one of the most publicized criminal trials of the 20th century.

After 11 months of trial, O J Simpson managed to worm his way out of the murder charges brought against him. On October 3, 1995, he was acquitted of the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. But although he was off the hook, Simpson’s career and public image never recovered from the scandal.

In 1997 the family of the second murder victim Ron Goldman filed a civil suit against Simpson. He was held liable for the death of the two victims and sentenced to pay 33,500,000 dollars in damages. After that Simpson fought financially and was still not able to comply with the demands of the civil sentence.

During the early 2000s, Simpson had numerous run-ins with the law, ranging from assault, robbery, drug trafficking, and various other crimes. Finally, in 2007 he again ran into serious legal difficulties. On September 13, 2007, he led a group of men in a robbery that took place at the Palace Station Hotel in Las Vegas. Simpson and his accomplices were arrested just two days after the robbery, which marked the beginning of another series of legal difficulties for the former sports superstar.

On October 3, 2008, Famer O J Simpson was convicted of 12 criminal charges, including armed robbery and kidnapping, at the American Football Hall. He was sentenced to a total of 33 years imprisonment with probation after serving 9 years. On October 1, 2017, O. J. Simpson received probation and was released from prison after spending only 9 years behind bars. He is indeed a free man, unfortunately, more people know him as a criminal and not as the great sportsman he used to be.
