College/NFL Career

Matt Kalil began his studies at the University of Southern California (USC). After his first year, he started his second season replacing Tyron Smith on the right tackle and was later to replace Charles Brown on the left tackle.

He also played in matches against very tough teams on the defensive line and blocked a point after the touchdown against Notre Dame. In his junior season, he maintained his position as a left starting tackle, and his outstanding performances led to him being called up to several All-American teams and winning the Morris Trophy as the twelfth Trojan offensive line player. He was also a semi-finalist in the 2011 Lombardi Prize.

After his senior season, he was considered the best offensive tackle candidate for the 2012 draft, and after an amazing performance in the NFL Combine, Matt was voted number three by the Minnesota Vikings. He became the first offensive lineman the team selected in the first round after Bryant McKinnie in 2002.

Matt Kalil was also voted USC’s fifth offensive lineman to be among the top five in an NFL draft. The other four are Ron Yary, Marvin Powell, Anthony Muñoz, and Tony Boselli. He signed a four-year contract with the franchise that kept him on the team until the end of the 2016 season.

During his years with the Viking, he was selected for the Pro Bowl after Trent Williams was injured in a fight at a nightclub and the Redskins attacked offensively. Kalil spent the latter part of his 2016 season on the bench after a hip injury.

In March 2017 he signed a 5-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, the same team that his older brother Ryan Kalil plays for. The Carolina Panthers are the third set of brothers to play on the same offensive line in NFL history and the first set of brothers to do so in 24 years. In his first season with the Panthers, he started all sixteen games in the left tackle.
