Mats Hummels Biography

Mats Hummels was born Mats Julian Hummels on 16 December 1988 in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. His parents are Hermann Hummels, his father, and Ulla Holtho, his mother. His father, Hermann, was also his mother for a while, Ulla, was a sports journalist – no wonder he became such a good football player. Hummels has a younger brother, Jonas Hummels, who also played football but retired due to an injury he sustained in the game that ended his career.

Hummels was very fond of football and wanted to play in the striker position at a very young age. After his family moved to Munich when he was six years old, he joined the youth team of FC Bayern Munich when his father got the job as coach of the club’s youth team. He joined the team at the age of fourteen and was coached by his father, but this did not give him preferential treatment, as he had to work hard to earn his place on the team.
