Earth was blessed on February 5, 1964, in Manhattan, New York, with the birth of Laura Leggett Linney, whose parents, Miriam Anderson “Ann” Perse (née Leggett) and Romulus Zachariah Linney IV, had no idea they had created a superstar. Their mother worked as a nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Linney got her love for the theater from her father, who was a playwright and novelist but died in 2011 at the age of 80 after a bout of lung cancer at his home in Germantown, New York.

Laura’s parents divorced when she was just 6 months old and her mother came to raise her in a small one-room apartment. From her father’s second marriage, Laura has a half-sister named Susan.

Laura attended Northfield Mount Hermon School, an elite preparatory school in New England. She graduated in 1982 and then went to Northwestern University to study acting. However, Laura earned her drama degree from Brown University, where she had been transferred. At Brown, she performed one of the plays written by her father. In 1986, the same year she graduated from Brown, Laura enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she graduated in 1990 and lived with her co-actress Jeanne Tripplehorn, best known for her roles in Basic Instinct and The Firm.
