Born on 22 December 1985 as Kate Esther Calvert, Tempest grew up as one of five children in South East London. At the age of 16, she made her first appearance at open-mic nights in a small hip-hop shop in Carnaby Street in London’s West End, known as Deal Real.

The following year, Tempest published her first book of poetry entitled “Everything Speaks in its Way”. It was a limited edition printed on her imprint, Zingaro. When she turned 26, she published another work entitled “Brand New Ancients”, a theatrical spoken piece at Battersea Arts Centre. This move earned her wonderful reviews and embarrassed her after winning the Herald Angel and the Ted Hughes Prize.
In September 2013, her play Hopelessly Devoted premiered at the Birmingham Rep Theatre after being produced by Paines Plough.
In 2014 Tempest worked with Dan Carey on her album Everybody Down, which she released the same year and for which she was nominated for the Mercury Prize 2014.
Later that year, in October, Hold Your Own – her book of poetry – was released to great commercial and critical acclaim. At the same time, Tempest was named Poet of the Next Generation.
