High School

College
After high school, Gaethje had a strong 191–9 wrestling record. He chose to wrestle at the University of Northern Colorado instead of a smaller college near his family. In his freshman year, he had an 18–9 record and took third place at the “Oregon Wrestling Classic.” His sophomore year was tougher, and he did not win any matches at the 2009 NCAA Championships. He ended the season with a 14–4 record and made the All-Conference First Team.

Early career
