John Oliver is an American-English comedian, television presenter, political commentator, writer, producer, and actor. Between 2006 and 2013 he worked as a buddy on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show as a senior British correspondent.

Oliver was brought into the spotlight in the summer of 2013 when Stewart took time off from the satirical show Comedy Central to make his directorial debut. Oliver quickly faced the situation and did a brilliant job on the big chair. His brief stint as a host was well received, and fans of the show simply assumed that he would take over when Stewart retired.

But before this succession could take place, Oliver was taken on by HBO to host his show Last Week Tonight Tonight, which premiered in 2014. The satirical news show, which featured 4 primetime Emmy Awards for 4 highly successful seasons, was extended until 2020.

John Oliver Biography

John William Oliver was born on 23 April 1977 in Birmingham, England. His father Jim Oliver worked as a school principal and social worker. His mother Carole was a music teacher. His parents were both originally from Liverpool.

Oliver was educated at the Mark Rutherford School in Bedford. After secondary school, he studied at Christ’s College in Cambridge where he obtained a degree in English. During his studies, he was Vice President of Cambridge Footlights, an amateur theatre club run by students from Cambridge University.

Oliver began as a stand-up comedian, making the rounds in pubs and laughing cabins in his native England. He traveled long distances to perform for which he was not even paid. However, he described these early hard days as some of his happiest moments, as he just wanted to make people laugh.

Later John Oliver started a collaboration with his British comedian colleague Andy Zaltzman. As a duo, they performed in stand-up comedy shows and also hosted two radio shows on BBC Radio 4.

The British-born comedian and political commentator moved to the USA after getting a job at Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show. According to him, he was interviewed for the show on the recommendation of another comedian, Ricky Gervais, who had never met Oliver but had come across his work.

Oliver’s original immigrant status placed some restrictions on what he was allowed to do in his adopted country – America. He rarely makes fun of some of the absurdities involved in the process of obtaining a U.S. residency permit.

One of these ridiculous conditions led Oliver to shut down The Daily Show during the strike of the Writers’ Guild. Since he had a visitor’s visa at the time, he would have been in danger of being deported by a strike during the production of the show. However, the political commentator received approval for his green card in October 2009.

Oliver John made his film debut as Dick Pants in the 2008 film The Love Guru and in 2016 Oliver John was announced as the voice of Zazu in the remake of Disney’s The Lion King.
