Joe Malcolm Harris was born on September 6, 1991, in Chelan, Washington. He came from a family of athletes; his father Joe Harris Sr. worked as a high school basketball coach. He served as coach of the Bridgeport High School basketball team for six years and Chelan High School for twenty-four years, while his mother, Alice Harris, was three athletes. During high school, she played softball, volleyball, and basketball. She currently works at Coldwell Banker Lake Chelan Properties. Joe has three amazing sisters, Kaiti, Mackenzie, and Jaicee; all three of his sisters are also active in sports.

While growing up, Harris attended Chelan High School where he began his basketball career. His father gave him a head start in the game as he was Chelan’s head coach at the time. As a junior, he helped the Mountain Goats win the Class 1A State Tournament, averaging 2.7 steals, 4.3 assists, 8.5 rebounds, and 24.7 points per game. At the end of the tournament, Harris won the Associated Press Class 1A Player of the Year award and was selected for the First Team All-Tournament.

During his senior year, Harris continued to make giant strides with the team, leading the Mountain Goats to the state tournament for the second year in a row, holding the season record of 26-2. His wonderful performances were greatly appreciated by all. He received several awards and recognitions, including the Washington Mr. Basketball Award and the Gatorade Washington Player of the Year Award. He finished his senior high school season with an average of 4.4 steals, 1.6 blocks, 8.0 rebounds, and 26.6 points per game. At the end of his high school career, Harris received a three-star college rating from Scout.com, ESPN, Rivals.com, and 247Sports.

Harris enrolled at the University of Virginia, where he played college basketball from 2010 to 2014. In his freshman year, he led the Cavaliers to the Maui Invitational Tournament, the ACC Big Ten Challenge, and the 2011 ACC Tournament, finishing the season with an average of 10.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. The following year, he was promoted to the second all-state team after averaging 11.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

As a junior, Joe Harris was called to the All-ACC first team after averaging 4.0 rebounds and 16.3 points per game. In his senior year, he led the Cavalier to his first ACC tournament title, becoming the MVP of the ACC tournament. At the end of the season, he was appointed to the first team of the All-Tournament and the third team of the All-ACC. Following his impressive performances, Harris was inducted into the NBA Draft Prospects in 2014.

Professional Career And Stats

In the 2014 NBA Draft, Joe Harris was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers; he was the 33rd player to be selected this year. After signing his contract as a rookie, he split his playing time between the Cavaliers and the Canton Charge of the NBA G-League. He played for the Cavaliers in the 2014 NBA Summer League with an average of 1.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 7.8 points. After taking on Kevin Love and LeBron James, he got little or no playing time on the Cavaliers’ team.

In 2015 the Cavaliers made it to the NBA finals but lost to the Golden State Warriors. By the end of his rookie season, Harris had an average of 2.1 points per game. He underwent surgery in January 2016 to remove an extra bone from his right foot. He was then traded for a 2017 second-round selection for the Orlando Magic in exchange for a 2020 second-round selection. Immediately after the swap, he was dropped from the Magic.

In July 2016 Joe Harris signed with the Brooklyn Nets. His first appearance with the Nets was in their game against the Boston Celtics. When he came off the bench, Harris scored a total of 16 points in the game. At the end of the season, he averaged 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 8.2 points per game. The following season he scored 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 10.8 points per game. In July 2018 Harris received a contract extension with the Nets.
