He was born in Vernal, Utah, on April 18, 1947, the son of his parents; Gail Peyton Woods his father, and Martha Woods his mother. Woods’ father, an army intelligence officer, died in 1960 after an operation when the actor was still a teenager. Years after the death of his father, his mother remarried Thomas E. Dixon.
James attended Pilgrim High School, after which he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and studied political science. Woods was a member of the Theta Delta Chi Brotherhood at MIT.
