Butland went straight into the first team and showed his impressive range of talent, so impressive in fact that he signed a new contract in Birmingham, which expires during the loan period in 2015. He was so impressive on the month-long loan that Cheltenham had to let him finish in February 2010 with a youth loan until the end of the season. After leaving Birmingham, Butland moved to Premier Club Stoke City on 31 January 2014 but returned to Birmingham to play the rest of the season. He came for an initial sum of £3.3 million, which could rise to £3.5 million.

After his loan in Birmingham City, Jack returned to be the third choice behind Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen and had to return on loan, this time to championship team Barnsley with a three-month emergency loan.

After a successful time at Barnsley, Butland made his debut after the first-choice goalkeeper, while Asmir Begovic was injured. In a match against Everton, Butland had to replace Thomas Sorensen as the second choice at half-time, the game ended 1-1. After months of understudy, Butland finally made his first full Premier League debut in a match against Liverpool that ended in a 3-5 defeat.

His promising career with Stoke reached an all-time low in the 2017/2018 season when Butland played 36 of 38 possible matches without being able to help his club avoid relegation.
