J. J. Barea is with the Dallas Mavericks winner of the Puerto Rican National Basketball Association Championship. The Northeastern University star player scored, broke, and established a number of school records before joining the Mavs in 2006, becoming only the seventh Puerto Rican to ever play in the NBA. He was also the second player in his country to win the 2011 Larry O’Brien Trophy.

The recipient of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award 2018, who spent three years with the Minnesota Timberwolves between two Mavs assignments, is also a multiple gold medalist at the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games with the Puerto Rican national team.

J. J. Barea, whose full birth name is José Juan Barea Mora, was born on June 26, 1984, in Mayagüez, the eighth-largest municipality in Puerto Rico. Details of his life before he started playing basketball at the Miami Christian School are not known, but it is reported that in 2001 he started playing competitive-level basketball with his professional basketball team called Indios de Mayagüez in his hometown.

After joining the Miami Christian School, Barea averaged 20 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals in his only recorded year of high school basketball, helping the team to a 38-2 record and the national championship title. After graduating, J. J. Barea attended Northeastern University, where he continued his accomplishments that earned him rave reviews in high school.

In his first year of study, he averaged 17.0 points in 28 games, 3.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, which earned him a place on the third team of the All-AEC and AEC All-Rookie Team. In his second year, he was honored in 26 games with an average of 20.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.6 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game in the first team of the All-AEC. Barea was again honored to be a first-team All-AEC finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, having averaged 22.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game in 30 games.

In his last college season, J. J. Barea received accolades from all corners of the globe for being named CAA Player of the Year and being voted into the first All-CAA team among many other honors. In 29 games he averaged 21.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game, making him the second-best scorer and assistant in his school.

Despite all his achievements, J. J. Barea remained without a draft in the 2006 NBA Draft. He then chose the route of the Las Vegas Summer League, where teams normally try out players who would not normally make it into the starting team. Barea first played five games for the Golden State Warriors before playing three games for the Dallas Mavericks. When the competition ended, the Mavericks caught him on a multi-year contract, and the rest became history.

Viviana Ortiz started going out with her basketball beauty in the summer of 2013. Before meeting him, she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications from the Sacred Heart University of Puerto Rico. The 5 foot 9 1/2 inch tall beauty then competed as Miss Corozal in the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2011 contest, which she won. She then represented the country in this year’s Miss Universe pageant, but only managed a top 16 finish.

However, his actual height was a bone of contention in the NBA, as the federation listed him at 1.83 m (6 feet 0 inches), although it is clear that he is smaller than that. According to another report, he is said to be 1.8 m (5 feet 11 inches) tall, while another says he is 1.78 m (5 feet 10 inches) tall, which seems more plausible by all indications.
