As a corporate lawyer and legal luminary by profession, Adam Silver decided to swap the courtroom for the boardroom because he is now the number one player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) – commissioner of the NBA – after joining the league in 1992. How did he make the transition from Special Assistant to Commissioner? Read on to find out…

Adam Silver Bio, Age

Adam Silver is a native New Yorker born on April 25, 1962. He also grew up in the city (in the Rye suburb of New York). His parents are Edward and Melba Silver, and although they are citizens of the United States, his family also has Jewish roots. He has four older siblings, two brothers and two sisters – Erik, Ann, Owen, and Emily.

While Silver pursued a career in law, his siblings each took very different paths. His brother Erik Silver works as a tennis director at a resort in Florida, while Owen Silver is an entrepreneur in Boulder, Colorado. For his sisters, Ann runs a non-profit organization in Nevada, while Emily Geier lives with her family in Ohio and is simply a housewife and mother.

Silver Geier grew up in New York at Rye High School before going on to college at Duke University and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984. Immediately after graduation, he began working for U.S. Congressman Les AuCoin in Capitol Hill as an office assistant and quit after two years to earn a law degree – which he did at the University of Chicago Law School in 1988.

Career

Although a “muted” basketball fan, as he likes to describe his passion for the sport, he never really thought he would end up in basketball management (even though he was a die-hard New York Knicks fan as a kid). Before he found himself in the NBA, Adam Silver worked as a corporate lawyer in New York. He worked at Cravath, Swaine & Moore as a litigator before serving as an attorney for Judge Kimba Wood, a U.S. federal judge.

Silver joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1992 and has since held various positions while advancing his career. He first served as a special assistant to David Stern, then commissioner of the NBA, then became chief of staff for the association before being promoted to senior vice president (and later president) and chief operating officer (COO) of NBA Entertainment. In July 2006, Silver was named Deputy NBA Commissioner and held this position for eight years.

However, he was anointed by his boss, David Stern, on October 25, 2012, when Stern announced that he would retire in February 2014. And three months later, Silver stood at the head of the commissioner’s most important test yet. The media brought a report about the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling, and his racist remarks about individuals in the league. The video met with widespread condemnation from everyone, especially from interest groups within the league.

As everyone watched to see what the NBA’s position on this issue would be and how they would react, Adam Silver struck a decisive blow. On April 29, 2014, he banned Sterling for life from associating with the NBA and all its concerns. He was also banned from playing in all areas. Silver then imposed a fine of 2.5 million dollars on the Clippers, which would go down in history as the worst fine ever imposed on a sports owner.

With this, his reputation in the whole world of sports grew like wildfire as an objective manager. He earned much praise for his bravery in taking a stand against all kinds of racism in basketball and world sports once and for all.

Who is He Married To? Family, Wife

Adam Silver married Maggie Grise in May 2015, after they had bonded at their first meeting. They were introduced by a mutual friend, and the rest became, as they say, history. Their family experienced an additional child – something Silver mentioned in an interview with Today in April 2015 that he is looking forward to this experience and can’t wait to find out what it feels like to be a father. His wish came true in 2017, two years after the wedding when his wife Maggie gave birth to a bouncing girl they called Louise Burns Silver.

Is Adam Silver Gay?

This question is expected by the fans of the NBA and also by the fans of Adam Silver since he was seen on two occasions at the Gay Pride Parade in New York City. Worse, Silver was not only there, he fully participated in the event and could be seen dancing while waving the gay flag.

At the 2018 Parade he was seen with Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in the NBA, Rick Welts, the president of the Golden State Warriors (who is also gay), and his (world) partner Todd Gage. These incidents have even led doubters to believe that the NBA commissioner is gay, and many held to this belief until he was married to his long-time girlfriend Maggie Grise.
