One of his great-grandfathers was Greek and his family was very religious becoming Christians after hearing Billy Graham.

Hugh grew up with four older siblings and a younger half-sister. His parents split when he was eight and he stayed in Australia with his dad and brothers while his mom went back to England with his sisters. He went to Pymble Public School for primary school and then to Knox Grammar School where he acted in a play and became the school captain. After taking a year off to work as a PE teacher in England he went to the University of Technology in Sydney and graduated with a degree in Communications.
