Basketball striker/guard Giannis Antetokounmpo is a professional basketball player affiliated with the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Since he was selected by the Bucks during the 2013 NBA Draft, Giannis has received NBA All-Star and All-NBA Second Team honors. After an impressive performance in 2017, he won the Most Improved Player award while being appointed to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

The Greek basketball star was born Giannis Antetokounmpo on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece. Giannis made his first touch in the game when he was thirteen years old and when he was fifteen in 2009; he joined the Greek youth team Filathlitikos. The baller has a Greek-Nigerian ethnic background.

Giannis played basketball in Greece and completed three seasons with the youth team of Filathlitikos from 2009 to 2012. When he turned pro at the age of eighteen, he joined the senior team of Filathlitikos where he played for one season (season 2012/13) before being shortlisted for the 2013 NBA draft.

Interestingly, the basketball player attracted the attention of several major European clubs during his time with Filathlitikos. Towards the end of the 2012/13 season, the Greek Freak, as he is known, signed a four-year contract with the Spanish team CAI Zaragoza, starting with the 2013/14 season. The contract also includes the takeover by the NBA at the end of each season. At the end of the 2012/13 season, however, Giannis was placed as one of the prospects for the 2013 NBA draft.

NBA Career and Stats

Giannis Antetokounmpo was invited to the NBA combine harvesting exercises, where he showed a wonderful performance. After the exercises, he was projected as one of the first players of the first round in the draft. Finally, he was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as 15th in the overall selection of the 2013 draft, whereupon he terminated his contract as a rookie at the Bucks on July 30, 2013.

In his first professional appearance in the 2013/14 regular NBA season, the Greek-Nigerian baller completed a total of 77 performances for the Bucks with an average of 4.4 rebounds and 6.8 points per game. During the All-Star weekend and at the end of his rookie year, he won a place in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge; Giannis was voted into the second NBA All-Rookie Team.

The next season, Giannis scored 6.7 rebounds and 12.7 points per game, leading the Bucks to the playoffs. In the playoffs, however, they lost to the Chicago Bulls with a 4-2 playoff record. In the 2015/16 season, he made a huge improvement in his games and finished the season with a record of 7.7 rebounds and 16.9 points per game.

In 2016, Giannis achieved his seventh triple-double in his career and was one step away from breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s franchise record of eight triple-doubles. He was also elected to the NBA All-Star, All-Star Second Team, and All-Defensive Second Team after finishing the season with an average of 8.7 rebounds and 22.9 points. For his brilliant performances, Giannis was honored with the NBA Most Improved Player Award for his efforts.
