Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Charles David Liddell, better known by his stage name Chuck Liddell, is a mixed martial arts athlete born in Santa Barbara, California on December 17, 1969, to parents of partially Irish descent. Not much is known about his father, who was not involved in his upbringing. He was raised by his mother and grandmother along with his other siblings and attended San Marcos High School, where he was very active in wrestling. Since Chuck was a very athletic child, he was also active in the soccer team as a center and linebacker.

Chuck Liddell’s grandmother introduced him and his siblings to boxing at a very young age, so he learned Koei-Kan-Karate at the age of 12. After high school, he went to California Polytechnic State University to study business/accounting and graduated in 1995. During this time Chuck Liddell also became a Division I wrestler. By the time he graduated, he had broken several records and set many others. As an amateur kickboxer, he held a record of only 2 defeats and 20 wins, 16 of which he won by knockout.

After school Liddel made the decision to take his career as a mixed martial artist to the next level. He moved to Las Vegas Nevada where he was taken under the wings of Jon Lewis and began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Chuck Liddell Career

He made his professional debut in 1998 at UFC 17, an event held as part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Alabama. He scored a victory in his first fight against Noe Hernandez, won his next fight by defeating Vale Tudo fighter Jose “Pele” Landi-Johns, but soon had to concede his first defeat to Jeremy Horn, whereupon he returned to a winning streak that made him a top contender and a force to be reckoned with. In 2002, the name Chuck Liddell was well known in the UFC as a contender for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

In 2013, the champ switched to representing the UFC at the Pride championships. This came after he suffered a defeat in a spate of punches from heavyweight champion Randy Couture. Back in the UFC, his feud with Tito Ortiz soon reached its boiling point on April 2, 2004, in a UFC 47 game. Although Liddell won, Tito did not forgive him for blinding him with a blow that left him black until the fight was over.

Among his many other successes in his career, Chuck was known for being exceptional when he knocked Vernon Tiger out white, breaking his orbital bone with his hands … very badly! He trained alongside John Hackleman from all his active years from 1998 to 2010, winning many awards, including admission to the UFC Hall of Fame.

Chuck Liddell proved his worth outside the ring as well, trying his hand at movies and reality TV, where he excelled as himself in the leading roles or as a voice actor. He published his autobiographical book entitled Iceman: My Fighting Life in 2008.
