Cary Elwes was born on October 26, 1962, in Westminster, London, as Ivan Simon Cary Elwes. Elwes grew up in a Roman Catholic environment and once served as an altar boy in Westminster Cathedral. Elwes’ parents were forced to separate when he was just 4 years old and when he was 12 years old his father took his own life.

After graduating from Harrow School, Cary Elwes attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. In 1981 he moved to New York City and studied acting at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville. He also took acting classes at Actors Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

As a teenager, Cary began working as a production assistant on film sets. He began acting professionally in 1984 and made his debut in Another Country. Elwes starred in a handful of other films before making his big breakthrough with The Bride of the Prince. He began acting on the small screen in 1996 – he made his debut in an episode of Seinfeld.
