Bobby Portis is an American professional basketball player who began playing like a pro with the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association, NBA. Like most professional basketball players, Bobby Portis played college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks, from where he graduated from the Bulls in the 2015 NBA Draft to the 22nd place in the NBA. Bobby Portis was born on February 10, 1995, in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States of America. He is of African descent and was raised by his single mother, Tina Edwards, the eldest of four children. His younger siblings (all brothers) are Jared, Jamaal, and Jarod, and he describes his entire family as his pride and joy. Portis also had an uncle, Anthony Hicks, who played basketball in the state of Missouri.

Bobby had a difficult childhood and did not grow up in a privileged home; his mother worked for American Airlines, and his maternal grandfather, Otis, was a cab driver. His biological father was no help either, but Portis remained positive and focused on getting an education. He attended Hall High School in his hometown, where he was a highly decorated preparation basketball player.

In 2003 he earned McDonald’s and Parade All-American status and was named Mr. Basketball of Arkansas. After high school, he committed to Arkansas to become the first McDonald’s All-American in the state to sign with the Razorbacks since 1992.

Career Stats

Bobby Portis played a total of 70 college basketball games in the Arkansas Razorback mean team from 2013 to 2015. He achieved an average of 15.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.3 assists.

Throughout his college career, the 6’11” Power Forward was appointed to the All-SEC team and led the Razorbacks to a top 25 finish. He finished the 2014-15 season as one of the best players in college basketball and was named a first-round candidate in the 2015 NBA draft.

On July 7, 2015, he signed his contract as Rookie Scale with the Chicago Bulls after the team voted him 22nd overall in the 2015 NBA Draft. Although his team suffered two consecutive defeats against the Charlotte Hornets and Detriot Pistons on November 3 and December 19, 2015, respectively, after his NBA debut, Portis achieved a career-high of 30 points and 11 rebounds.

It has been reported that some of the Bulls’ five starting members got tired after a four-fold extra time against the Pistons as they prepared for the December game against the New York Knickerbockers. The result gave Bobby Portis the advantage of using his eager energy to breathe life into the team and experience the best night of his young career.

The Bulls extended Portis’ contract on October 28, 2016, for the 2017 to 2018 seasons, and he was assigned to the Windy City Bulls, a team affiliated with the Chicago Bulls, but was recalled the day after. His first three wins with the team came on February 16, 2017, in a 104-103 game against the Boston Celtics, a 94-87 win over the Golden State Warriors on March 2, and a 95-86 win over Utah Jazz. Overall, Portis had a career-high of 58 points and 13 rebounds.

Portis suffered a brief career setback on October 17, 2017, after a brawl with his teammate Nikola Mirotic during training, which he punched in the face. The Bulls suspended him for eight games until he made his season debut on November 7. His team lost the game in a 119-114 defeat to the Toronto Raptors, while he scored 21 points and 13 rebounds.

In the game against the Boston Celtics on December 11, Portis recorded a career-high of 23 points in a 108-85 win over the Boston Celtics. The power striker set a new record of 27 points on December 15, scoring 12 rebounds in the Bulls’ 115-109 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Bulls began the 2018 season with a 116-115 defeat of the Philadelphia 76ers and a 114-109 defeat of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Portis scored another career highlight – 53 points and 15 rebounds during the season.

In May 2018 Portis surprised his mother with a new, fully furnished house, north of Little Rock, where Portis was born. Not even his younger brothers knew about it.
