Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is Danish. She was born on January 16, 1982, in Hillerød (center of North Zealand, north of Copenhagen, Denmark) as the daughter of her parents Christian Hjort Sørensen (father) and Kirsten Damgaard Pedersen (mother), who are both doctors. Her parents later moved to Birkerød, where she spent the rest of her childhood growing up with her two older sisters.

The Danish actress was enrolled at Bistrup School in Birkerød and later at Øregård High School in Hellerup, where she was editor of the school newspaper and student council chairperson. During one of her school trips to London, Birgitte saw the West End Musical production of Chicago, which she fell in love with, and began to nurture the ambition to become an actress.

She also identified herself as a member of a mini-musical school group organized by the Gladsaxe Theatre, which gave her the opportunity to train in musical theater for 6 months. She continued her acting education at the Danish National School of Performing Arts, and before graduating she made her screen debut in the television series The Eagle in 2005. This was followed by her role as Nanna in the 2006 Danish short film Tre Somre. Other films at the beginning of her career were Canoe, Crush (as Lotte), both in 2007, The Funeral (as Daisy), Anja & Viktor – I medgang og modgang (as Daisy), The Candidate (as Sarah), Alliances (Sofie), all in 2008 and Ved verdens end, where she played the role of Beate in the 2009 film.

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen won gold in the Danish film industry when she acted as a journalist (Katrine Fønsmark) in the commercially successful fictional political drama series Borgen, in which she invested time and trained to fit in perfectly with the character. The television series ran from 2010-2013 and had a total of 30 episodes. For her spectacular performance in the series, she was nominated for the Robert Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Television).

After the success of Borgen and the resulting wider recognition of her acting abilities, Birgitte started to get roles for movies and TV series as often as possible. Some of her remarkable film work then included Love Is in the Air (2011) as Camilla, the Spanish-Bulgarian sci-fi film Autómata in 2014, in which she appeared alongside Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Robert Forster, and many others as Rachel Vaucan. Sørensen’s recent films include Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) as Kommissar, 3 Things (2017) as Camilla, and several other works.

On television, she has made remarkable works such as BBC 3 Bluestone 42 (2013) as Astrid in the first series, Episode 3, HBO’s Game of Thrones (2015) where she portrayed the character of Karsi in the episode “Hardhome”, and her last leading role in Greyzone (2018) as Victoria Rahbek in the TV2 television series.

Although we got to know Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as a film and TV actress, the Danish celebrity has not completely abandoned her acting roots. Over the years she has acted in several stages works such as Mød mig på Cassiopeia (2007) at Nørrebros Theatre, Coriolanus (2013-2014) at Donmar Warehouse, and of course Les Liaisons Dangereuses (2016-2017), which was shown at Booth Theatre.
