William Scott Goldberg was born on 27 December 1966 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has a Jewish heritage, which meant that he had to go through the Jewish ritual, the bar mitzvah, at the age of thirteen. His parents are Jed Goldberg, a Harvard graduate who is both a gynecologist and obstetrician, and Ethel Goldberg, a musician (his mother plays the violin) and gardener. He is the last child of the family. He has three siblings, two older brothers named Steve and Michael Goldberg, and one older sister named Barbara Goldberg.

He attended Thomas Edison High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After graduating from high school, he went to the University of Georgia where he earned a degree in psychology. Although Bill Goldberg is now known as a wrestler, football was his first love as he fell in love with football at a very young age. Bill Goldberg played high school and college football. After college, Bill Goldberg was selected in the 1990 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams with the 302nd overall selection (11th round). In his professional football career, he should also play for the CFL Sacramento Gold Miners and the Atlanta Falcons. In the 1995 season, he was also on the roster of the Carolina Panthers, although he never played for them.

After an injury that ended his career, he would leave the NFL without any performance. And even though he was satisfied to have played in the NFL at all (a lifelong dream), he regretted not having achieved anything in the game he loved so much. He ventured into the world of wrestling in 1997 after the idea was suggested to him during rehabilitation after his injury.

Goldberg fought in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1996 to 2002, All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) from 2002 to 2003, before joining World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for a year in March 2003, battling star names such as Chris Jericho, The Rock, and Triple H. In 2018 he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. In 2005 he took a short break from WWE and worked in the mixed martial arts (MMA) where he was a commentator.
