Gregg Marshall is an American college basketball coach who helps aspiring professional basketball players improve their skills to prepare for the biggest stage, the NBA. After years of working as an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon, Belmont Abbey, College of Charleston, and Marshall, Gregg Marshall received his first job as head coach in Winthrop in 1998. Marshall has set many records with the team and continues to improve his resume as head coach at Wichita State University, where he began training in 2007.
Gregg Marshall Biography
Marshall was born on February 27, 1963, in Greenwood, South Carolina, as Michael Gregg Marshall. As a teenager, Gregg played as a 6-footballer as a point guard for the Knights basketball team at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia.
He graduated in 1981 and attended Randolph-Macon College, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and continued to play basketball as a point guard. He graduated in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in business and commerce. Gregg then attended the University of Richmond, where he earned a Masters’s degree in Sports Management in 1987.
After graduating from college, Gregg Marshall began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his Alma Mater Randolph-Macon. Over the next 13 years, Marshall spent time improving his coaching skills in various programs around the country. His first position as head coach was at Winthrop University in 1998. He finished his residency at the school in 2007 as the most successful coach in the history of men’s basketball in Winthrop. He won 6 regular season titles and 7 titles in the Big South tournaments.
Marshall was named head coach of the Wichita State Shockers’ men’s basketball team in April and has surpassed his achievements in Winthrop by successfully transforming the team from a so-ran team to true title contenders.

Salary
With Gregg Marshall at the helm of the Wichita State’s Shockers, the overall performance of the team has steadily increased, and the man behind the team has been duly rewarded. His salary as head coach of the Shockers was $1.8 million, but after leading the team into NCAA Division I Sweet 16 2014-15, things changed quickly for Marshall.
He got on the radar of many other top schools, who quickly knocked for his services and made him massive offers. One of them was Alabama, which sent its then-athletic director Bill Battle to court Marshall with a deal that started with a $4 million annual salary.
It was tempting, as Marshall often remembers, but while he was preparing to take a flight to see the Crimson Flood, the Shockers’ wealthy backers called him and asked him what it would cost to keep him from the trip.
The result of the negotiations was a deal that raised Gregg Marshall’s salary to $3 million a year. And although it may be less than what Alabama had on the table, Marshall didn’t feel it because, as Forbes correctly pointed out, the cost of living in Wichita is quite low – about 10% below the national average, which allows Marshall to live like a king in the small town of Kansas City.
His annual salary rose to $3.5 million by 2018 and would stay that way until 2022. The team’s athletic director would decide on possible increases. With this number, Marshall is one of the 10 highest-paid college basketball coaches.
Gregg Marshall’s contract includes many bonuses with conditions that, if met, would allow him to earn even more. These conditions include: $35,000 for 20 or more wins, $36,000 for each NCAA tournament game, $60,000 for reaching the Sweet 16, $100,000 for the Final Four and $200,000 for winning the NCAA title.
He also has access to two replacement cars for business and personal use, membership at Flint Hills National Golf Club, Crestview Country Club, and Genesis Health Club. Six recruiting trips, charter jets for street games and a $623,000 pool to pay three assistant coaches are part of the agreement.
Family – Wife, Daughter
Gregg Marshall has been married to his wife Lynn Marshall since 1994. Together they formed a family that produced a daughter named Maggie Marshall. Gregg’s family has become a large part of the Shockers and is often called the team’s biggest fan. They never miss a game and are always seen cheering for the Shockers team in the stands.

The passion of Marshall’s wife made headlines during a game against Kentucky in March 2017 when she was escorted from the stands by a security guard. During the breaks of the game, she had shouted obscenities and behaved inappropriately. The Shockers finally lost 65-62.
Lynn has loved basketball since childhood and played for high school, Maryland, and Western Washington University.
